The places Singaporeans keep for themselves. Until now.
Most visitors do Marina Bay, Chinatown and Sentosa, then fly home. These are the quarries, mangroves, farms, old rail lines and quiet temples locals take friends to. Many sit far from the CBD, so give one a free morning and go early, before the heat.

Painted statues of Chinese myths, paid for by a Tiger Balm fortune. The garden is partly shut for repairs, but Hell's Museum is open.
Exit A of the MRT is a minute away. Allow 90 minutes. Halloween nights start 8 Oct and may shorten museum hours, so check the site first.

Old quarries turned into a cliff-ringed lake full of dragonflies, plus the Wallace Trail, named after the Victorian naturalist.
Walk in from Hillview MRT. Start at 07:00 before the heat, wear proper shoes and carry water. The quarry lake is the reward.

Trains to Malaysia stopped here until 2011. The station keeps its levers and ticket booth, and the green Rail Corridor runs off both ways.
Exit A at King Albert Park, turn left, five minutes' walk. Go early, walk a stretch of the corridor, then coffee in the old staff quarters.
Pulau Ubin · Free · MRT Tanah Merah (EW4), then bus 2 and a bumboat

Boardwalks and a tall lookout tower at the far end of Pulau Ubin. Part of the Coastal Loop is shut for works until April 2027.
Bumboat from Changi Point, then hire a bike for the 3 km ride. Go at a low tide of 0.5 m or below. Bring cash, water and repellent.
Kranji · MRT Kranji (NS7), then a Grab

A working farm out in Kranji where you wander the beds and orchards, then sit down to a relaxed lunch cooked from the land around you.
It is far, so Grab from Kranji MRT and pair it with Hay Dairies nearby. Weekends open at 07:00. Bring a hat and insect repellent.
Changi Village · Free · MRT Tanah Merah (EW4), then bus 2 to Changi Village

Six sections hug the coast past cliffs and old kelong-style decks. One stretch is shut for repairs, with a signed way round.
Come for sunset, then eat at Changi Village Hawker Centre. The walk takes about 45 minutes and is lit, so it works after dinner too.

Ponds and reedbeds on the edge of Kranji Reservoir, managed for birds. The Raptor Tower, 15 minutes in, gives the wide view.
Arrive at 07:00 with binoculars; birds go quiet by late morning. Migrating raptors pass from November. The tower is stairs only.
Upper Thomson · Free · MRT Lentor (TE5), then a 2.3 km walk

Trails wind past the walls and steps of a village that emptied in the 1980s. It is also a stronghold of the rare Raffles' banded langur.
Grab to the Upper Thomson Road entrance; Lentor MRT is a 2.3 km walk. Go early, stay on the trails and keep snacks away from macaques.

Built over the former Sin Seng Quarry, with a bird hide in the wetland, forest boardwalks and a lookout deck on the cliff.
Walk up from Beauty World MRT. A 700 m step-free path reaches the Quarry Wetland. No bikes or pets. Watch for gliding colugos at dusk.

A 1950s quarry flooded into a lake, with a granite outcrop that looks borrowed from southern China. Two domed shelters frame the view.
A short walk from Bukit Gombak MRT, and there is no carpark. Best in soft morning or late-afternoon light. Thirty minutes is plenty.

A waterway through Punggol's new estates, with a bridge shaped like a fishing kelong, a preserved bus stop and a domed bridge for sunset.
Hire a bike and loop the waterway at golden hour from the Jewel Bridge. Keep riding to Coney Island if you still have legs.

Reedbeds on an old rubbish dump filter water before it reaches Serangoon Reservoir. Flat, quiet and good for herons and little grebes.
Cross the red bridge over the reservoir and follow the self-guided learning trail. Go at dawn or dusk: there is little shade at midday.

A forested Chinese cemetery opened in 1922 and full of Singapore's founding families. A new signed trail leads you to 32 notable graves.
Enter at the Lorong Halwa gate and follow the Wayfinder signs. Go in daylight in long trousers with repellent; paths get muddy after rain.

A skyscraper whose whole facade is a vertical garden of creepers, with 30-metre sky gardens cut into it. Best seen from the street.
Look up from Peck Seah Street, right by Tanjong Pagar MRT. The rooftop pools are for guests, but its bar and restaurants take walk-ins.

WOHA's 'hotel in a garden': terraces of tropical planting spill down the building like contour lines on a hillside.
The best view is from Hong Lim Park across the road. Book Lime to eat inside. Its pool floor is closed 12–25 Oct for upgrades.

Commissioned in 1845 by Hajjah Fatimah, a trader, it blends Indo-Islamic and neoclassical styles. The minaret still leans, slightly.
Dress modestly and take shoes off before the prayer hall. Avoid Friday midday prayers. Ten minutes' walk from Kampong Glam.

A temple founded in 1826, now squeezed between CBD towers. Its roofs carry whole miniature towns built from cut ceramic shards.
A five-minute escape from Raffles Place at lunch. Step back in the courtyard to take in the roofs. Keep quiet; it is a working temple.

A 1913 Hokkien temple above Mohamed Sultan Road. Two craft teams worked on it, so the left and right halls never quite match.
Climb the steps from Mohamed Sultan Road in daylight, spot the differences, then walk down to Robertson Quay for a riverside drink.

A 19th-century Tan clan temple tucked behind Clarke Quay's malls, with carved granite dragon columns and dragon and tiger walls.
Minutes from Clarke Quay MRT, yet most people walk right past. Visit by day, then cross to the river when the bars wake up.

Eight hectares of shade on a hill wrapped around a disused reservoir. Locals jog it; visitors almost never find their way up.
Walk up from Outram Park and combine it with dinner in Chinatown. Expect steps and slopes; there is no wheelchair access.

Walk to the end of the long jetty and Malaysia is just across the Strait of Johor. Breezy, near-empty on weekdays, lovely at sunset.
Ride the Thomson-East Coast Line to Woodlands North and walk over. Allow an hour, and time it for sunset over the strait.

Young forest on the edge of the central nature reserve, with short trails such as the Drongo Trail. A gentle, crowd-free start.
Walk 1.2 km from Upper Thomson MRT or Grab to Venus Drive. Go at 07:00, stay on the trails and never feed the monkeys.

A small pagoda guarded by four bronze lions, honouring a resistance leader who died in Japanese custody in 1944. Steps from the Merlion.
Stop on the walk from the Esplanade to the Merlion. Read the plaques in four languages, then find the Cenotaph next to it.

Ground fought over in the 1942 Battle of Pasir Panjang. A 280 m canopy walk links it to the Bukit Chandu war museum.
Pair it with Reflections at Bukit Chandu and HortPark along the Southern Ridges. Go early; there are steep slopes and stairs.

An island off the Punggol shore left deliberately rough: sandy tracks, casuarina trees and quiet little beaches at the far end.
Open 07:00–19:00. Cycle in from Punggol Waterway and carry water; there are no shops inside. Take your rubbish home.

Seven towers of public housing joined by sky gardens on the 50th floor. Thousands live below; visitors pay a few dollars to stroll the top.
Head up from Block 1G for sunset over the port, then walk down to Duxton Hill for dinner. Keep it quiet: these are people's homes.
